Opening Ceremony of CFSS Butterfly Corner and Seed Bank

The opening ceremony of the CFSS Butterfly Corner and Seed Bank was successfully held on Friday, November 7. We were honored to have Dr. Chan Ka Shing, Chairman of the Alumni Association; Mr. Yu Shui Kwan, Vice Chairman; Ms. Cher Man Wai, Chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association; and former Chairperson Ms. Lee Pui Pui officiate the ribbon-cutting ceremony. During the event, alumnus Mr. Ching Wai Lok led a group of students in presenting their ecological learning achievements, showcasing their passion and dedication to environmental science.

The newly established Butterfly Corner features over a hundred species of butterfly specimens. Through an interactive mobile application, students can explore the world of butterflies and deepen their understanding of the importance of biodiversity conservation. Butterflies play a vital role as pollinators, facilitating plant reproduction and maintaining ecological balance. They also serve as a crucial component of the food chain, providing nourishment for various animals. Moreover, their sensitivity to environmental changes makes them essential bio-indicators, reflecting the health of our ecosystems.

Scientists and archaeologists warn that if natural habitats continue to be destroyed, the Earth may soon face the "Sixth Mass Extinction." Inspired by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, CFSS has established its own Seed Bank, collecting more than 300 types of seeds, pinecones, and fruits from the school campus and around the world. This initiative aims to promote biodiversity and environmental education. Seeds effectively preserve the complete DNA of plants, offering hope for species revival even in the face of extinction. Under the right conditions, these seeds can germinate and restore lost species, contributing to the global effort to combat ecological collapse.
